Sandwell Farm, Harberton
New build dwelling house
Completion date : Late 2019
This bespoke one-off dwelling house is situated in Harberton nr. Totnes, Devon. The clients own a small holding and circa 7 acres of surrounding green field land, the dwelling will be located where they can easily access and maintain their small holdings.
The clients had a good idea of what they wanted, which helped influence the design and material pallet of the dwelling. With my input during the design brief and an onsite walk, I was able to get a real understanding of the proposals. This was then co-ordinated with the clients requirements, and we were both happy with the outcome.
The striking split mono-pitch roof design was a big consideration to this scheme. The main purpose is to allow for several banks of photovoltiac panels, all of which will be facing south giving the most efficiency. This roof build up is supported off large exposed glulam beams, which canti-lever over the veranda.
The material pallet had been decided to be locally source'd stonework and slate. Alongside with painted render, where the dwelling is screened by foliage and tree's. Aluminium windows, doors, rainwater goods and roofing verges and trims will give this dwelling a contemporary feel.
Coombe House, North Huish
Mansard roof conversion and fenestration works
Completion date : Late 2018/Early 2019
This picturesque holiday home is situated in the rolling hills of Devon. The current manor house has had poor works to the rear facing elevations, with a miss-match of dormers and roofing facades.
The client proposes to introduce a mansard roof with new dormers, for additional roof space. Furthermore the fenestration works will be enhanced to match the vernacular of the 'Georgian' era.
This will be achieved with stone quoins, grand moulded stone entrance canopies, wrought iron balconies and all windows and doors replaced throughout. This should bring back the characteristics of a Gentleman's Country House, and restore the picturesque Devonshire setting.
Higher Mowles, Plymouth
Rear extension, and internal alterations
Completed : Summer 2018.
This contemporary single storey rear extension, was to create a large open planned kitchen and diner/lounge. The clients were involved in the build stage throughout, and had various sub-contractors to help them where necessary. The finished extension with the open planned lounge, has lightened up the house, and created a warm and spacious contemporary feel.
Jennycliff Lane, Plymouth
Rear extension
Completion date : Mid 2019
This contemporary single storey rear extension, is to create a large open planned kitchen and diner. Which is very common and sought after in this era. A steel 'goalpost' frame is proposed around the end of cavity wall structure, to create a large glass facade to the gable end. This not just aesthetically looks great, but will give the extension floods of natural light and ventilation. The veranda to the end will complete the extension, with a usable amenities area.
Arnside Close, Plymouth
Porch extension
Completed : April 2018
This small and simple porch extension provided a practical use to an existing dwelling house. It incorporated a downstairs WC and a play area for the grandchildren. The clients were more than happy with the result.
Fore Street, Brixham
Loft conversion
Completion date : Late 2018
This is an existing shop with accommodation above on Fore Street; the principal road driving into Brixham town. The existing loft had previously been converted, but had been done poorly and a long time ago. The main structural elements to the roof were failing, and the ridge was bowing - a careful but robust structural design had to be taken into consideration. This concluded in replacing the whole roof, and installing a large steel ridge beam to support it.
The front facade sash windows were replaced, alongside with the whole roof and slate finish. Several banks of rooflights were added to this front elevation also to allow for natural light and ventilation (as seen in the photo above). A large dormer to the rear allowed for the headroom for 2 large bedrooms, and an en-suite, to the newly constructed loft conversion.
